Ci-Dev signed an emissions reduction purchase agreement (ERPA) with the Development Bank of Ethiopia (DBE) on July 14, 2016 for the purchase of approximately 800,000 certified emission reductions (CERs) to be generated through end 2024. The Ci-Dev revenues will be used in three ways to increase consumer confidence in high-quality but new off-grid solar lighting products in Ethiopia, including solar lanterns and solar home systems (SHS). First, Ci-Dev will support the demonstration of a warranty tracking and enforcement system that will ensure companies follow through on the warranty promises they make to households that purchase their products. Second, ERPA revenues will also help to make repair and replacement of SHS batteries more affordable to households purchasing the SHS. Finally, the CER purchases will fund a maintenance incentive for those private sector solar companies that demonstrate a strong track record of product upkeep.
